Cleanroom Airflow

Cleanrooms are required for special processes that require very clean environments. Airflow is a key aspect of cleanroom design. Airflow is controlled by HVAC units and filtration systems.

Three types of airflow patterns are used to classify the air entering the cleanroom. Laminar flow is one of the most common types. Laminar flow is when air flows in layers and the layers are parallel. HEPA filters filter the air and ensure that clean air flows into the cleanroom. The air flows down in layers to the floor, where it is filtered and recirculated.

Turbulent air is the next type of airflow used in cleanrooms. HEPA filters are used to filter air through HEPA filters. However, turbulent flow is not the same as laminar flow. Turbulent air is a mixture of different angles. It’s recirculated by various grilles on the walls or support columns. Turbulent air is usually used in rooms that don’t need to be kept clean.

This last type of airflow is a mixture of turbulent and laminar flow. This type of mixed airflow is used in cleanrooms with separate zones for different processes. Certain areas of the room might need to be cleaned at a higher level, while others may not be suitable for certain processes. Cleaner zones can be divided by soft-walled plastic curtains or modular hard walls, depending on the cleanroom design. Which type of airflow is best for your cleanroom? It all comes down to the type of work being done in the cleanroom. However, most cleanroom designers prefer laminar flow. Laminar air flow was an older type that allowed air to travel straight from the ceiling to the floor. Modern cleanrooms do not require that the ceiling be raised and can accept air through the grilles located near the floor.

Modular construction also allows for greater quality assurance because the materials are manufactured under controlled factory conditions.
