Have you ever heard someone refer to themselves as a cat person or a dog person? One of my best friends in San Diego once asserted that, “Cats have staff and dogs have family.” She is a cat person and I am a dog person. Although, I actually do love all God’s little critters, cats too, dogs are my favorites. The more the merrier as far as I am concerned. Anyway, we started distinguishing what were the differences between cats and cat people versus dogs and dog people. hairless cat for sale Here is what we came up with.
Cats seem to be more independent and a bit more aloof than dogs. If cats were people they would be the snobs. Cat people seem to like that cats are less needy and dependent, giving their people more freedom to roam without worrying about getting home by a certain time in order to feed or walk them. Cats don’t need them as much as dogs do for daily care and affection. Cats can be left alone for a couple of days with plenty of food and water and they are fine. Cats also like affection and attention but on their terms and in their time frame. You can’t rush or push a cat. Have you heard the term, “It’s like herding cats,”? They own you rather than the other way around. They will decide whether or not you are worthy of their time, attention and energy. It is up to them or they simply are not available. They just hide out or watch from a place that we can’t get to. They are the ones who establish the boundaries and the rules and how things are going to go. They decide whether or not they like you. Cat people seem to like this selective and aloof nature of most cats. There are exceptions but as a rule most cats are more aloof than most dogs. Cat people seem to be amused by these characteristics of their cats. They seem to enjoy being chosen when their cat does decide to bless them with their presence. And, they seem to get a kick out of a cat who demands attention by plopping down on top of the paper or book you are reading when they are ready to be the center of attention.
Dogs, on the other hand, are needy-creature-love-sponges with no sense of pride or dignity. In fact, cats look down their noses at dogs for just this reason, since cats consider themselves such dignified subjects worthy of complete worship. Not so with the dog! If there is worshiping to be done, the dog will be doing it, not expecting it, unlike their snobby counterparts. Dogs can’t wait to greet us at the door and don’t hold back or play hard to get for our affections. They are quite a different animal than our friends the dignified cats. If dogs were people they would be the martyr-people-pleasers begging to be loved. Let’s face it, cats look down their noses at dogs. Cats, after all, have class and style, grace and dignity. Dogs are so, well, needy and sloppy. They are content with a humbler position at our feet rather than above our heads like so many cats flaunt as their position of superiority. Dogs are humble, lovable, playful and ready to do whatever you want when you want them to. They are ready, willing and able as long as they get to come and be with us anytime all the time. Nothing is worse for a dog than being left all alone, not included with their pack. That is agony for a dog, not for a cat. Dogs need us for love and companionship, where as cats need us once in a while to tend to their needs as servants who clean out their cat box and run errands for them such as grocery shopping. Dogs thrive and need strong leadership, boundaries and limitations. Cats laugh at the thought of anyone restricting them in anyway. Cats use us for their amusement and delight while we use dogs for ours.
Whether you are a cat or a dog person, they are both amusing and lovable creatures to share our lives with, no matter what your preference. Both need us for their salvation too, since over 11 million domesticated cats and dogs are euthanized every year in the United States alone due to overpopulation. So, adopt, rescue, neuter and spay your cats and dogs! If you are a cat person rescue one. If you are a dog person adopt one from a shelter or rescue and you will discover they will probably be the best and most loyal friend you have ever had. Remember, life is short, wag more, bark less!
